BPI Building Analyst and Envelope Professional -- Dual Certification

Prerequisites: Designed for students with previous home performance experience, i.e. energy audits and/or material installations. Blower door experience recommended.

Building Performance Institute (BPI) certifications demonstrate a level of knowledge and expertise that potential clients look for and can help you land new work. In addition, many federal, state, and utility initiatives require BPI certifications for contractor participation in energy efficiency projects.

Now make the best use of a brief window away from your job site by tackling the training for two related certifications in one course — Building Analyst and Envelope Professional.

Preparing students for the written and field certification exams, this training will focus on the building sciences related to the physics and control strategies for air, heat, and moisture. This includes:
  • Instruction in the proper use of pressure differentials as a diagnostic tool;
  • Use of established analytical testing equipment such as blower doors, micro manometers, flow meters, and carbon monoxide and combustible gas sensors to analyze and correct building performance issues;
  • Exploration of BPI health and safety standards relating to proper venting of combustion appliances, establishing correct building airflow standards for occupants, and controlling moisture and other indoor pollutants, along with the science behind these standards.

The approximately five days of training includes classroom, laboratory, and field exercises. Written and field exams for dual certifications of Building Analyst and Envelope Professional will follow.

In the exams, students will individually demonstration their skills with and knowledge of building systems analysis, identification of potential health and safety issues, installation standards for recommended energy upgrades, and performance features of the optimized building envelope.

All written and field exams will be supervised by accredited BPI proctors.

Note: Students should be equipped with a pocket calculator, tape measure and digital manometer if possible. Any additional diagnostic equipment students care to bring for instruction or comparative purposes is welcome.
